AMD releases RDNA 4m firmware to prepare Linux for Zen 6 mobile chips
AMD has released firmware for its upcoming RDNA 4m graphics architecture, a key step in preparing Linux-based systems for the next generation of mobile processors. The firmware, targeting the GFX 11.7 family, is expected to support the upcoming Zen 6-based Medusa Point APUs. This release includes components for graphics, security, display, and memory management, facilitating smoother integration for Linux distributions before the hardware officially hits the market.
Simultaneously, the Linux kernel 7.3 is entering its active merge window, introducing significant updates. These include support for AMD's UALink infrastructure, CXL Type-2 accelerators for AMD Solarflare network cards, and optimizations for memory management and scheduling. The new kernel version also addresses hardware-specific needs, such as low-power core support for upcoming AMD processors and improved performance for older hardware.
However, the development of Linux 7.3 has highlighted the growing impact of AI-generated code. While AI models are assisting in bug fixes and network optimizations, developers have noted they are feeling ‘completely overwhelmed’ by the volume of code requiring manual verification for security and correctness.
