Linux Mint to release version 27 ‘Adrien’ with new annual cycle

Linux Mint is preparing to release version 27, codenamed ‘Adrien’, expected to arrive around the Christmas holiday season. This release marks a major shift in the distribution’s development strategy, moving from a six-month release cycle to an annual one.

Founder Clement Lefebvre noted that the transition to a yearly cycle allows the team to tackle more ambitious projects, implement more features, and address a higher volume of bug fixes than previous versions. This extended development window is intended to result in a more solid and improved system.

In addition to the development cycle change, the project is introducing a new version numbering system. Instead of following a sequential progression from version 23, the project will skip numbers to align with the new annual cadence, starting with version 27. The project is also refreshing its codename convention; after years of using female names in alphabetical order, the new series begins with ‘Adrien’, introducing more variety in naming.
