Linz legionellosis outbreak causes three deaths and 26 illnesses
An outbreak of legionellosis in Linz, Austria, has resulted in at least 26 illnesses and three deaths. Health authorities, including the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), are investigating the cause of the severe pneumonia cases.
Preliminary investigations have identified Legionella bacteria in cooling towers belonging to Linz AG, the city's utility provider. While these systems have been cleaned and disinfected, officials have not yet definitively confirmed if they are the sole source of the infection. Experts suggest there may be additional sources within the city's water or ventilation systems.
Genetic analysis of the bacteria from three patients revealed they belong to the 'Allentown/France' sub-type, suggesting a common source of infection. Of the 26 affected individuals, 24 required hospitalization, with some receiving intensive care. Two patients who contracted the illness in Linz are currently living abroad. Authorities are utilizing satellite imagery, weather data, and artificial intelligence to assist in the ongoing search for the infection source.
