Lion cubs rescued from Israel trafficking relocated to South Africa

Two lion cubs, Ben Tzur and Ori, have been relocated to the Animal Defenders International (ADI) Wildlife Sanctuary in the Free State, South Africa, following an international rescue effort. The cubs were previously victims of illegal wildlife trafficking in Israel, where they were confiscated by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority from unsuitable private settings.

Ben Tzur had been found tied to a tree in the West Bank, while Ori was discovered in poor health in Kfar Qasim. The rescue highlights a disturbing criminal trend where wildlife is trafficked alongside illegal arms and linked to organized crime. Experts note that cubs are often traded for high sums, sometimes up to $25,000, and are frequently used as status symbols on social media.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority reported that in 2025, over 560 wild animals were captured in illegal trade incidents, including reptiles, monkeys, and birds. The transfer to South Africa follows a 30-hour journey involving a stop in Germany to ensure the cubs reach a permanent, appropriate habitat.
