Lion rescued from abandoned home in Matamoros, Tamaulipas
Authorities discovered a lion inside an apparently abandoned house in the colonia México of Matamoros, Tamaulipas. The animal was located during a coordinated operation involving environmental officials, security forces and the National Defense Secretariat, with drones monitoring the scene.
The lion was transferred without sedation to Ecopark Matamoros, a temporary wildlife rescue centre that has housed species such as tigers, bears and kangaroos. A first medical check showed the animal was not severely malnourished, though its previous confinement in a small cage was deemed inadequate. Veterinary staff will continue to monitor its health while the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) decides the lion’s final disposition. Mexican law permits wildlife possession only with proper authorisation, and the rescue underscores enforcement against illegal private keeping of wild animals.
