Lionel Messi announces retirement from professional soccer

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from professional soccer, marking the end of a historic career that included a FIFA World Cup victory and eight Ballon d’Or awards.

Despite the retirement announcement, Messi continues to compete with Inter Miami in the MLS. During a recent 2-2 draw against San Diego, Messi scored his 930th career goal and his 75th direct free kick. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 74 direct free kick goals held by Jair Rosa Pinto, leaving him just three goals shy of Marcelinho Carioca’s world record of 78.

Messi is currently under contract with the Florida-based franchise until the end of 2028. His next scheduled match with Inter Miami is against Columbus Crew on September 27.
