Lionel Messi avoids MLS suspension via good behavior rule
Lionel Messi will be available for Inter Miami’s upcoming match against the New England Revolution despite having accumulated five yellow cards this MLS season. Under standard disciplinary protocols, five bookings typically trigger an automatic one-match suspension.
However, Messi is protected by the MLS “Good Behavior Incentive” rule. This regulation allows a player to have one yellow card deducted from their disciplinary tally if they complete five consecutive matches without receiving any yellow card, red card, or supplemental discipline. This incentive can be applied up to three times during a single regular season.
Messi has already utilized this rule twice this season by completing two separate five-match stretches without disciplinary sanctions. Consequently, while he has received five yellow cards in total, only three are currently counted toward his disciplinary record. This allows him to participate in the high-stakes match against New England, which is critical for Eastern Conference playoff positioning and potential qualification for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.
