Lionel Messi announces retirement from Argentina national team

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from the Argentina national football team at the age of 39. The decision was shared via an emotional handwritten letter on social media, following Argentina's defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. Messi concludes a 21-year international career in which he earned 207 caps and scored 125 goals, leading the team to victories in the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 Copa América, and the 2024 Copa América.

To honor his legacy, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has announced a nationwide tribute. During the upcoming weekend of matches across all football disciplines—including men’s, women’s, futsal, and beach soccer—play will be paused in the 10th minute for one minute of applause. Additionally, stadiums equipped with video boards will broadcast a tribute video produced by the AFA.

The AFA is also preparing for a new era under coach Lionel Scaloni. The federation will officially announce the schedule for upcoming friendly matches during the September/October FIFA window this coming Monday. Speculation regarding Messi's successor for the iconic number 10 shirt has already begun, with Nico Paz being identified by some reports as a likely candidate.
