Lionel Messi called up for Argentina farewell match against Benin

Lionel Messi has been called up to the Argentina national team for a series of friendly matches, which will include his official farewell from international football. Following his retirement announcement on August 31, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and coach Lionel Scaloni have confirmed that Messi will participate in the final match of a three-game international window.

The scheduled matches are as follows:

• September 30: Argentina vs. Bolivia at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Córdoba. • October 3: Argentina vs. Burkina Faso at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. • October 6: Argentina vs. Benin at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

Messi, along with Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso, is expected to join the squad specifically for the October 6 match against Benin, which will serve as his final appearance for the Albiceleste. AFA President Claudio Tapia announced that the 2022 World Cup winning squad and their families will be invited to attend the ceremony to honor the captain.

The squad also features a mix of veteran players and rising talents, including Franco Mastantuono, Román Vega, and Gianluca Prestianni. The matches are intended to serve as the beginning of the transition toward the 2030 World Cup.
