Lionel Messi faces potential Argentina farewell match and Inter Miami future

Following Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football, discussions have emerged regarding his future with Inter Miami and a potential farewell match with the Argentina national team.

Messi is currently under contract with Inter Miami through the end of the 2028 MLS season. While his age remains a factor, he continues to perform at a high level, recently scoring four goals in a 7-1 victory against Montreal and leading the league with 18 goals this season. Former MLS player Shaka Hislop expressed optimism that Messi will fulfill his contract, noting that his involvement in plans for Miami’s new stadium could encourage him to stay through the term.

Simultaneously, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) is reportedly considering organizing a special farewell match for the World Cup winner. There is speculation that this could take place during the FIFA international window between September 21 and October 6. Potential venues include Buenos Aires’ Estadio Monumental or Rosario, Messi’s birthplace. While no official announcement regarding the opponent or date has been made, the match would serve as a formal tribute to his international career, which includes 207 caps and 125 goals.
