Lionel Messi fined by MLS for contact with opponent
Major League Soccer (MLS) has imposed an undisclosed fine on Lionel Messi following an incident during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw against the Philadelphia Union on August 19. The disciplinary committee cited a violation of league policy regarding contact with an opponent’s face, head, or neck.
The incident occurred in the 101st minute when Messi, following a verbal exchange with Philadelphia’s Quinn Sullivan, made contact with the back of Sullivan’s head. While the match referee did not issue a card at the time because his back was turned, the league subsequently took disciplinary action.
Other disciplinary measures were taken during the match. Inter Miami’s Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan both received red cards during heated exchanges in stoppage time, though Cavan Sullivan’s suspension was later overturned upon review. Additionally, Inter Miami player Ian Fray was also fined for an incident involving Sullivan.
Despite the disciplinary issues, Messi scored his first goal since the passing of his father, Jorge Messi. Inter Miami currently sits in second place in the Eastern Conference, seven points behind leader Nashville.
