Lionel Messi retires from Argentina national team

Lionel Messi has officially retired from international football with the Argentina national team. His final appearance took place during a friendly match against Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, attended by 85,000 spectators.

During the match, Messi provided assists for goals by Nicolás Otamendi and Nico Paz before scoring his 126th international goal via a penalty in the 71st minute. The event included a standing ovation for the captain and various tributes, including a giant number 10 jersey displayed on the pitch.

In a personal farewell, Messi expressed his gratitude to the Argentine people, his teammates, coaches, and his family. He reflected on his 21-year journey, noting the immense joy and sadness experienced throughout his career, while also paying tribute to the legacy of Diego Maradona. Although retiring from the national team, the 39-year-old will continue his professional career with Inter Miami in MLS.
