Lionel Messi retires from international football
Lionel Messi has officially retired from international football following a final appearance for Argentina. In his farewell match, a friendly against Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, Messi scored one goal and provided two assists in a 3-0 victory before a crowd of over 85,000 fans.
In a social media post, Messi reflected on his 21-year international career, expressing gratitude to his country and acknowledging the legacy of Diego Maradona. His decorated tenure includes winning the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, and the 2022 Finalissima.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese captain and longtime rival, publicly praised Messi’s achievements.
