Lionel Messi's switch from Nike to Adidas deemed major sports‑marketing miss

Lionel Messi wore Nike boots when he scored his first senior goal for Barcelona on 1 May 2005 at age 17. Mid‑2000s he transferred to German sportswear group Adidas, which later turned him into a global brand ambassador, launched his own boot line and, in 2017, signed a lifetime contract worth tens of millions of dollars per year.

The move is repeatedly called one of the biggest marketing errors in sport history for Nike. Viral stories claim Messi’s father asked Nike for extra family gear and received no reply, prompting Adidas to present a far more lucrative offer, though this detail remains unverified. Analysts note that while Nike certainly missed a valuable partnership, estimates of “thousands of billions” in lost revenue lack solid economic basis.
