Lionel Sanders ruled out of Ironman Kona 2026 due to injury

Canadian triathlete Lionel Sanders will not compete in the 2026 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, after a stress‑fracture injury prevented him from qualifying at the final trial, Ironman Kalmar, on 15 August. The injury, first sustained at Ironman Texas in April, left him unable to train for the full‑distance race and forced him to miss the last chance to earn a slot for Kona. Sanders, a two‑time runner‑up (2017 and 2021) and a regular at the event, last raced in Kona in 2024, finishing 32nd. His absence ends a planned ninth appearance at the World Championship, and he has hinted that a return might only be possible for the 2027 edition.

The setback highlights the physical toll of elite triathlon competition and leaves the 2026 Kona field without one of its most recognizable athletes.
