Lionel Scaloni to remain Argentina coach through the 2030 World Cup

Lionel Scaloni has reached a verbal agreement with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to extend his contract as head coach until the 2030 World Cup, with the formal announcement to be made after the 2026 tournament. The extension follows a previous deal signed in February 2023 that secured his tenure through the 2026 World Cup cycle.

During his spell, Scaloni led Argentina to back‑to‑back Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, a Finalissima victory and the 2022 World Cup triumph. He has overseen 99 matches, recording 72 wins, 18 draws and 9 losses, and is set to reach his 100th match in June 2026. AFA president Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia has publicly supported the renewal, emphasizing the need for stability as the team prepares to defend its title and aim for success at the centennial 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
