Lionfish spotted on Montenegro's Adriatic coast raises health and ecological concerns

A venomous lionfish was photographed near Risan in the Kotor Bay of Montenegro's Adriatic Sea. The image, posted on the municipal Facebook group, sparked public alarm. Experts warn that the fish’s spines can deliver an immediate, intense pain accompanied by swelling, nausea, dizziness, and breathing difficulties, and advise victims to immerse the affected area in water around 45 °C before seeking medical help.

Lionfish are native to the Indian Ocean and Red Sea and have entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Their rapid spread in the Adriatic poses a serious threat to marine biodiversity, as they prey on small fish and lack natural predators in the region. Authorities recommend avoiding handling the fish, reporting sightings, and, where permitted, organized culling to curb its expansion.
