Lions and tigers begin relocation from Argentina to US and South Africa

Thirty lions and tigers have begun a major international relocation from the former Luján Zoo in Argentina to sanctuaries in South Africa and the United States. The rescue mission, organized by the animal welfare group Four Paws, follows the 2020 closure of the Argentine zoo due to safety and welfare concerns.

The animals are being divided between two primary destinations: Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa, which is receiving six lions and nine tigers, and The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, which is receiving seven lions and eight tigers. To ensure stability, family groups and lifelong companions are being moved together.

The relocation process involved intensive veterinary preparation. While some cats entered crates voluntarily through specialized training, others required sedation. Many of the animals arrived at the site with health issues including malnutrition, obesity, dental disease, and kidney problems resulting from years of living in cramped concrete enclosures.
