Lions prepare for URC season opener against Leinster

The Johannesburg-based Lions are preparing for the 2026-27 United Rugby Championship (URC) season, following a historic period where they reached the play-offs and qualified for the European Champions Cup for the first time.

To bolster depth and improve their win-loss record, coach Ivan ‘Cash’ van Rooyen has made several key signings. The squad includes new additions such as Springbok Boan Venter, Boeta Chamberlain, and Hyron Adams. The team also features fly-half Chris Smith, who was the URC’s second-top point-scorer last season.

The Lions face a challenging season opener at home against two-time defending champions Leinster. While Leinster has historically struggled in South Africa, winning only one of their last eight matches in the Republic, they remain a formidable opponent known for their defensive system and ability to disrupt opposition structures.
