Lionsgate announces plans for Michael Jackson biopic sequel

Lionsgate is planning a sequel to the Michael Jackson biographical film, titled ‘Michael 2’. Adam Fogelson, head of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, stated that the studio hopes to begin production in late 2026 or early 2027.

The studio aims for a theatrical release in late 2027 or the first half of 2028, though an official premiere date has not yet been set. To assist with the sequel, Lionsgate noted that musical footage filmed during the production of the first movie that was not included in the final cut may be utilized.

The decision to develop a sequel follows the significant commercial success of the first film, which grossed over $1 billion at the global box office, ranking it among the most successful music biopics of all time.
