Lionsgate develops sequel to Michael Jackson biopic
Lionsgate is developing a sequel to the Michael Jackson biopic following the first film's global box office success, which surpassed $1 billion. Adam Fogelson, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, confirmed the studio is working on a continuation that aims to be a large-scale production.
Filming is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027, with a theatrical release projected between late 2027 and the first half of 2028. The studio plans to incorporate musical numbers and footage previously filmed but excluded from the first movie.
While the first film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson, concluded during the ‘Bad’ album tour, the sequel is expected to cover later stages of Jackson's career, potentially including the ‘Dangerous’ era and addressing legal controversies that were omitted from the initial release due to legal disputes.
