Lionsgate plans sequel to Michael Jackson biopic

Lionsgate is planning a sequel to the Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' following the film's massive commercial success, which surpassed $1 billion at the global box office.

Adam Fogelson, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, indicated that production for the sequel could begin in late 2026 or early 2027. A potential theatrical release is targeted for late 2027 or the first half of 2028. The sequel is expected to utilize some previously filmed musical sequences to manage the budget and production scale.

The first film, starring Jaafar Jackson as his uncle, concludes around the 1987 'Bad' era. While the specific narrative focus of the sequel remains unconfirmed, it may cover Jackson's later career and the controversies surrounding him. Some critics noted that the first installment provided an incomplete portrayal by omitting significant periods of the singer's life, including various legal challenges.
