Lionsgate Posts Record Film Revenue on ‘Michael’ Biopic, Narrows Quarterly Loss

Lionsgate reported a strong fiscal‑2027 first quarter, with total revenue of $776.6 million, up 48% from a year earlier. Home entertainment sales reached $184.1 million, an 8.5% rise, driven largely by a $46 million increase in digital media revenue that climbed to $153.8 million, a 42.7% jump. The motion‑picture segment generated $587.3 million in revenue—more than double the prior‑year quarter—and posted a profit of $105 million, the best ever for a June quarter. The studio’s biopic “Michael” became the highest‑grossing biopic of all time, surpassing $1 billion at the global box office, while other releases such as “The Housemaid” contributed solid ancillary earnings.

The television‑production segment saw revenue fall 34% to $189.3 million and profit drop 61% to $10.2 million, which the company attributed to the timing of episodic deliveries. Overall, Lionsgate narrowed its net loss to $28.8 million, or ten cents per diluted share, compared with a $94 million loss a year earlier. Film division head Adam Fogelson announced plans for a sequel to “Michael,” targeting production by the end of the year and a release in late 2027 or early 2028.
