Lionsgate re-releases Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’ in theaters

Lionsgate has announced an official theatrical re-release of Mel Gibson’s biblical epic, ‘The Passion of the Christ’, scheduled to run from September 10 to September 17. Originally released in February 2004, the film became a global phenomenon, grossing approximately $612 million worldwide and setting records as a high-grossing R-rated production.

The film is noted for its graphic and realistic depiction of the final hours of Jesus Christ. Director Mel Gibson has stated his intention was to move away from sanitized depictions to emphasize the grueling nature of the event. This re-release serves as a precursor to Gibson’s upcoming two-part sequel, ‘The Resurrection of Christ’, which is expected to be released in May 2027.

Critical reception for the original film included praise from Roger Ebert, who awarded it four stars, noting that the film successfully achieved Gibson’s specific artistic vision regarding the physical suffering of Christ.
