Lipari Mayor Riccardo Gullo Blamed for Missing Tourism Boost from Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’

Christopher Nolan’s film *The Odyssey* was shot in parts of the Aeolian archipelago, including Favignana and Lipari. Favignana’s local leaders say the production has turned the island into a global showcase, estimating a tourism uplift of more than €250 million over the next three years and up to €500 million in five years.

Opposition councilors in Lipari – including Gaetano Orto, Antonino Russo, Cristina Dante, and others – accuse Mayor Riccardo Gullo and his tourism and culture assessors of ignoring the opportunity. They note that while hundreds of crew members filmed on the islands, Lipari saw no open‑air screenings, promotional events, or additional services, even as residents continue to struggle with water shortages and other municipal gaps. The council warns that the administration’s inaction could have political repercussions.
