Lipedema distinguished from obesity by medical experts
Medical experts are highlighting the critical distinction between lipedema and obesity. Dr. Hülya Yüksel from Acıbadem Kayseri Hospital explains that lipedema is a chronic connective tissue disease, not simple fat accumulation. It is characterized by abnormal, disproportionate fat buildup in the legs, hips, and sometimes arms, often accompanied by pain, sensitivity, and easy bruising.
Unlike obesity, lipedema is typically resistant to standard diet and exercise regimens. The condition is thought to be influenced by genetic factors and hormones, with progression often linked to life stages such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Early diagnosis is emphasized to prevent mobility issues and declining quality of life.
Nutritionist Gamze Ustabaş notes that while there is no single diet for lipedema, personalized nutrition can help manage symptoms. Effective dietary approaches focus on reducing inflammation and controlling edema through low-carbohydrate, low-glycemic index foods, while avoiding refined sugars, processed foods, and trans fats.
