Lipno water safety issues prompt Czech rescue officials to warn of risky boating behavior

Czech water‑sport authorities are raising alarms over safety on the country’s rivers and lakes. Rescue chief Petr Ptáček highlighted that, despite roughly 800,000 people using waterways annually, drownings remain low at one to two per year, but incidents involving intoxicated boaters and unsafe conduct still occur.

At the Lipno reservoir, an influx of both experienced and novice sailors has led to more rescue calls. Low water levels expose hidden obstacles such as submerged logs and islands, while sudden wind shifts create hazardous conditions. Recent incidents include children on an electric‑motor boat being blown toward an island without assistance from nearby yachts, and a sailboat colliding with a marked buoy despite visible warnings. Officials stress the need for greater awareness, respectful behavior, and adherence to safety guidelines to prevent injuries.
