Lippisches Landesmuseum hosts prehistoric marine life exhibition

The Lippisches Landesmuseum in Detmold is hosting a new exhibition titled ‘überLeben – Walheimat Urmeer’, which explores the prehistoric marine life that once inhabited parts of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Through original fossils, reconstructions, and depictions, the exhibit illustrates the diverse ecosystem of the warm, shallow seas that covered the region during the Oligocene and Miocene epochs. Featured specimens include shark teeth and fossils of seals, whales, and manatees.

The centerpiece of the collection is the ‘Kervenheimer Wal’, a 6.5-meter-long, fully preserved baleen whale skeleton discovered in a sand pit in Kevelaer during the late 1980s. The exhibition is scheduled to run until April 4.
