Lisa documentary ‘Always Lalisa’ addresses career shifts and label tensions

The documentary ‘Always Lalisa’, directed by Sue Kim, is set for release on October 12. The film explores BLACKPINK member Lisa’s journey of personal growth and her transition toward a solo career in the Western music market.

Director Sue Kim revealed that the production faced obstacles with YG Entertainment, as the label reportedly refused to license music or footage featuring BLACKPINK. This restriction prevented the film from incorporating certain elements of Lisa’s early K-pop career and lore, sparking backlash from fans who criticized the company’s lack of cooperation.

The documentary also features candid footage regarding a past controversy involving racial slurs used during Lisa’s teenage trainee years. In a scene filmed in her dressing room, Lisa offers an unscripted apology, explaining that she was unaware of the sensitivity of the terms at the time due to her background as a Thai speaker. Kim described this moment as a significant depiction of Lisa’s growth and self-reflection.
