Lisa Kudrow discusses early career struggles with Hollywood beauty standards

Actress Lisa Kudrow has shared reflections on the challenges she faced early in her career regarding Hollywood's strict beauty standards. Speaking on the ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast by The Hollywood Reporter, Kudrow revealed that during auditions and meetings with agents, she was frequently told she was not “sublime” enough to meet the industry's expectations for sitcom leads.

Kudrow noted that while the feedback was difficult, she did not find the comments absurd and understood the industry's preferences at the time. She emphasized that her focus remained on her acting rather than conforming to traditional standards of being “cute.”

Ultimately, Kudrow secured the role of Phoebe Buffay in the hit series ‘Friends’. Her performance earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1998, making her the first main cast member of the show to receive the honor. She also noted that she had originally auditioned for the role of Rachel Green, which was eventually played by Jennifer Aniston.
