Lisa Manobal's TV appearance sparks debate over Thai alcohol laws

A recent appearance by Thai artist Lisa Manobal on an American late-night talk show has sparked a debate in Thailand regarding national alcohol advertising regulations. After clips of the singer consuming a Thai beer brand were shared online, questions arose as to whether the incident violated local laws.

Thailand’s Public Health Ministry has clarified that no laws were breached. Minister Pattana Promphat stated that because the event occurred abroad and lacked commercial intent, it is viewed as a personal action rather than a product promotion. He noted that while Thai law regulates advertising, domestic media can share clips as long as brand logos are blurred.

The incident has also highlighted ongoing legislative discussions. Pheu Thai Party official Chanin Rongthanakiet noted that while Parliament amended laws last November to allow for more information and public education regarding alcohol, the specific implementing regulations have yet to be finalized. Proponents of these updates argue that clearer rules could benefit smaller Thai manufacturers and the tourism economy.
