Élisabeth Ndiaye, iconic Senegalese news anchor, passes away

Senegal's media community is mourning the death of Élisabeth Ndiaye, a prominent figure in the nation's broadcasting history. Known as the ‘queen of the 8 p.m. news,’ Ndiaye was a mainstay on the RTS television news for three decades.

Ndiaye began her career in October 1970 at the ORTS, working as a radio host, television presenter, and announcer before becoming the lead news anchor. She was highly regarded for her professional rigor and her commitment to clear, accessible journalistic writing. To refine her skills, she sought training internationally at institutions such as Radio Nederland Hilversum in the Netherlands and the INA in Paris.

After leaving the airwaves in 2001 for personal reasons, she lived a private life away from the media spotlight. In December 2023, she was honored by the Convention of Young Reporters of Senegal as one of the elders of the press.
