Lisandro Martinez faces uncertain Manchester United future after hierarchy criticism

Lisandro Martinez’s future at Manchester United is in doubt following his public criticism of the club’s hierarchy after a Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. The Argentine defender expressed frustration regarding the club’s summer recruitment, implicitly targeting technical director Jason Wilcox.

Reports suggest the tension was exacerbated by the club’s squad depth issues during the match in Madrid. Due to injuries, manager Michael Carrick was forced to play 20-year-old central defender Ayden Heaven out of position at left-back. Martinez was reportedly dissatisfied that the club’s transfer strategy left them in a position where a young player had to occupy an unfamiliar role in a major European fixture.

While Martinez later clarified on Instagram that his comments were born of frustration and that unity is necessary, he has reportedly suggested he does not see a long-term future at Old Trafford beyond his contract expiration in 2027. Michael Carrick has stated that the matter is being handled internally.
