Lisbon and Setúbal launch expanded waste‑recycling collection points

The association Vizinhos em Lisboa has asked the Lisbon City Council and local parish councils to install dedicated Volta deposit collection points at papelerias and eco‑stations. The proposal targets neighbourhoods such as Misericórdia, Santo António, Arroios and the historic centre, aiming to curb litter caused by people searching bins for refundable containers. The council has acknowledged that the Volta system, which reimburses 10 cents per eligible bottle or can, has created hygiene problems, and the association suggests installing micro‑containers that allow safe, contact‑free deposit.

Separately, the non‑profit Refood has extended its “Zero Waste, Double Impact” campaign until 30 September, inviting residents to drop off used batteries and lamps at collection points in Setúbal, Alcochete, Almada and Barreiro. The drive, coordinated with ERP Portugal and supported by Orima, seeks to divert hazardous waste from landfill and will reward the Refood hub that gathers the most material with new refrigeration equipment.
