Lisbon City Council Approves €44 Million for Education Programs Through 2030

The Lisbon Municipal Assembly voted to allocate roughly €44 million to education initiatives up to 2030. Funding will support family assistance, curricular enrichment activities and school meal provision. The vote saw abstentions from the PCP, PEV and Chega parties.

The assembly also approved contracts with 12 parish councils for the "Yellow" school‑mobility scheme, committing €90,000 for the 2025‑26 school year. The project, launched in 2022‑23, now covers half of Lisbon’s 24 parishes and aims to replace private car trips with buses.

In addition, delegations of competence were granted to 21 parishes for family‑support components – the Activities of Animation and Family Support (AAAF) and the Family Support Component (CAF) – totaling €15 million through the 2029‑30 school year. The remaining three parishes (Alvalade, Marvila and Santa Clara) will operate through partner protocols with an estimated €4.8 million budget.

Socialist Party members criticized the timing of the "Yellow" scheme as a late transfer of resources, while IL councilor Rodrigo Mello Gonçalves highlighted the project's sustained growth. PCP representatives noted the scheme’s communist origins, and PAN called for city‑wide expansion as an environmental commitment.
