Lisbon City Council proposes naming new avenues after historical figures

The Lisbon City Council is set to discuss and vote on proposals to rename sections of the Eixo Central in the Lumiar district. One proposal, submitted by Councilor for Culture Diogo Moura, seeks to name a stretch of the road between Rotunda Nelson Mandela and Rotunda Coronel Vítor Alves as “Avenida 25 de Novembro (1975)”.

The name commemorates the events of November 25, 1975, a pivotal moment in the Portuguese Revolutionary Process that helped stabilize the country's transition to democracy following the 1974 Carnation Revolution. The proposal notes that this date marked a shift toward a pluralistic representative democracy.

A second proposal suggests naming another section of the Eixo Central “Avenida Jorge Sampaio (1939-2021)” in honor of the former President of Portugal and former Mayor of Lisbon. Additionally, the council is considering awarding the Municipal Medal of Cultural Merit to actress Maria Rueff and television presenter Eládio Clímaco.
