Lisbon eviction of mother and two children coordinated with Santa Casa

Gebalis – Gestão de Bairros Municipais de Lisboa said the eviction of a mother with two children (aged 4 and 2) from a municipal dwelling in the Bairro do Condado, Marvila, was coordinated with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, the city agency responsible for social emergencies. The mother had been living with her partner, the grandson of the leaseholder, who together with the children’s father died in 2024. After reporting the deaths to Gebalis, she was instructed to present a proof of residence from the parish council but continued to pay rent, which the municipal firm accepted.

PCP councilor João Ferreira submitted an urgent request for clarification to Lisbon mayor Carlos Moedas, alleging that the eviction occurred without adequate social support. Gebalis clarified that the authorized household in the unit consisted of the tenant and the grandson, both now deceased, and that the displacement was arranged with Santa Casa, which can offer assistance at its Unidade de Proximidade Oriental on Largo de Santos‑o‑Novo, nº 27, between 9:00 and 17:00.
