Lisbon honors photographer Kenton Thatcher and moves to protect Marquês de Pombal Monument
Lisbon has awarded British photographer Kenton Thatcher the Municipal Medal of Cultural Merit. Thatcher, who has lived in the Portuguese capital for three decades, was recognized for creating a significant visual archive of the city's contemporary identity. His work includes portraits of notable Portuguese figures such as Cristiano Ronaldo and José Mourinho.
Separately, the Marquês de Pombal Monument in central Lisbon is undergoing a process for national heritage classification. Announced by the Cultural Heritage Institute, this designation would provide legal protection to the monument and a 50-meter surrounding protection zone. The monument, inaugurated in 1934, commemorates the statesman responsible for rebuilding Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake.
