Lisbon inaugurates memorial for Glória Funicular victims

One year after the Glória Funicular derailment in Lisbon, which killed 16 people and injured 24, a memorial has been inaugurated at Largo da Oliveirinha. The monument features a 150-year-old olive tree surrounded by 16 limestone blocks engraved with the names of the victims, who represented 15 different nationalities.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. Preliminary reports suggested maintenance failures and issues with the steel safety cable. While the public prosecutor expects a final report on criminal responsibility by March, victims' families have expressed frustration over a “year of silence” and a lack of direct communication from authorities.

Regarding financial compensation, the insurer Fidelidade has covered approximately 2.3 million euros in costs, including funeral services and medical treatments. However, of the 40 compensation processes related to the tragedy, only four have been concluded, with several others still in negotiation or judicial proceedings.

Labor unions have criticized the decision to outsource maintenance to external companies, arguing that internal oversight could have prevented the tragedy. Carris, the municipal transport operator, is planning an international tender to modernize the funicular system with the goal of resuming service by 2029.
