Lisbon increases policing after tourist injured in Rua Augusta shooting
Lisbon authorities have announced a reinforcement of inspections and policing in tourist areas following a shooting on Rua Augusta that injured a Swedish tourist. The incident occurred during a dispute involving individuals selling pressed bay leaf as a substitute for hashish.
In response, the Lisbon City Council is increasing oversight of illegal and irregular commercial activities in high-traffic zones. The government has also guaranteed an additional 100 municipal police officers to join the existing force. Furthermore, plans are underway to implement 100 video surveillance cameras in an investment estimated at 18 million euros.
A suspect was identified and detained in connection with the incident. The individual was initially held on a warrant related to a domestic violence case and has been ordered to present himself at a police station biweekly. The Public Security Police (PSP) and the Judiciary Police are continuing investigations to clarify the full extent of the involvement of those present during the shooting.
