Lisbon launches urban mobility pilot project in Arroios

Lisbon is launching an urban mobility pilot project in the Arroios district, specifically on Rua Almirante Barroso. The initiative is a partnership between the municipality and the Sustainable Urban Transitions Lab, aimed at using scientific evidence and data to improve traffic circulation, transport efficiency, and public space management.

The project adopts a “city-laboratory” approach, allowing officials to evaluate the impact of various measures before potential city-wide expansion. The study focuses on balancing the needs of motor vehicles, bicycles, micromobility, and pedestrians to enhance overall network accessibility.

Technical and scientific support is provided by ETH Zurich, which handles modeling and scientific components, while Bolt contributes mobility data and urban space usage analysis. The findings are expected to inform the update of Lisbon’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.
