Lisbon Mayor corrects Rossio cleaning cost to 138,104 euros
Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas has corrected the reported cost of cleaning the statue of Dom Pedro IV in Rossio. Following initial claims that the cleaning of the monument, which was vandalized during housing rights protests, cost 100,000 euros, Moedas clarified during a Lisbon Municipal Chamber meeting that the actual expenditure for taxpayers was 138,104 euros.
The correction followed inquiries from representatives of the PS and Chega parties. Chega councilor Bruno Mascarenhas questioned the justification for such high costs and the lack of protective perimeters for heritage sites. Similarly, PS councilor Pedro Anastácio noted that the single cleaning event cost more than 40 percent of the annual budget allocated for graffiti removal across three central Lisbon parishes, which is set at 244,000 euros for 2025.
