Lisbon Mayor orders removal of Rossio housing protest camp
Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas has issued a formal order for the “Acampada de Lisboa” housing protest camp to vacate Rossio Square. The decision aims to facilitate the installation of the city’s traditional Christmas market. Following a report from the Public Security Police (PSP) stating that the protest and the market are “inconciliáveis” (incompatible) in the same location, the Mayor suggested alternative sites including Largo de São Domingos, Praça Martim Moniz, or Restauradores.
Activist Renata Cambra has challenged the order, alleging that the Mayor is not complying with a previous decision by the Lisbon Administrative Court, which authorized the maintenance of a tent in the square until November 24. In response to the municipal order, Cambra has filed an injunction to suspend the removal of the tents.
Protest organizers have also announced plans to take their demonstrations to the Web Summit to impact the Mayor and the event’s image. Tensions remain high as municipal police have reportedly approached the site to execute the removal order.
