Lisbon Mayor pledges action on electric scooter safety

Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas has pledged to implement measures to address safety and management issues caused by electric scooters in the city. Speaking at the launch of a United Nations Global Road Safety Campaign, Moedas described the current situation regarding scooter parking and riding against traffic as a “great chaos.”

The Mayor noted that while he previously negotiated with operators to reduce the number of shared scooters in Lisbon by half, new interventions may be necessary if operators cannot prevent risky behaviors, such as riding in the wrong direction.

This announcement follows recent activity by the Automobile Club of Portugal (ACP), which reported collecting approximately 20,000 signatures from Lisbon residents to trigger a municipal referendum regarding the continuation of the shared electric scooter system in the city.
