Lisbon Mayor reports 100,000 euro cost to clean vandalized statue
Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas announced that cleaning the statue of Dom Pedro IV in Rossio Square cost the municipality approximately 100,000 euros. The expense follows acts of vandalism by protesters during housing rights demonstrations.
Moedas noted that the cleaning required specialized external teams to prevent damage to the historical monument, with costs reaching nearly 25,000 euros per day. This single operation represents roughly 20% of the city's annual 505,000 euro budget for graffiti removal.
Because the monument has been vandalized again following the initial cleaning, the Mayor warned that a second intervention could cost between 40,000 and 50,000 euros, potentially bringing the total expenditure to 150,000 euros.
