Lisbon merchants seek dialogue over Christmas market and housing protest
Merchants in Lisbon's Baixa district are seeking a consensus with representatives of a housing protest camp regarding the use of Rossio Square. The conflict arises from the planned coexistence of the housing demonstration and a Christmas market scheduled for the same location.
Manuel Lopes, president of the Associação de Dinamização da Baixa Pombalina, expressed openness to dialogue but voiced concerns about the compatibility of both events. He noted that the Christmas market is vital for local commerce, attracting tens of thousands of consumers, and warned that its cancellation would cause significant financial loss to the area.
Lopes also highlighted security concerns, noting that some shops had previously closed for several hours due to safety worries. A decision by the Administrative Court of Lisbon indicated that if a solution cannot be reached, the Lisbon City Council may be required to provide an alternative space for the protest. The Christmas market is scheduled to run from November 13 to December 21.
