Lisbon Metro adds new elevators at Martim Moniz and Intendente stations

On 27 July, the Metro de Lisboa put into service two new elevators at Martim Moniz and three at Intendente, improving step‑free access between street level and platforms. The upgrades benefit people with reduced mobility, wheelchair users, seniors, families with strollers and passengers with luggage. With the installations, 47 of the network’s 56 stations – about 84% – now meet full accessibility standards. The rollout is part of a broader modernisation programme that, since 2018, has installed or replaced 42 elevators in 15 stations and 35 escalators or moving walkways. A further intervention at Praça de Espanha is slated for late August. A six‑million‑euro maintenance contract running to 2030 aims to cut equipment downtime, reducing elevator unavailability from roughly 33% to 17% and escalator downtime from 15% to 8%.
