Lisbon Metro signs contract to extend Red Line to Alcântara

The Lisbon Metro has signed a €405 million contract with Mota‑Engil – Engenharia e Construção, S.A. and SPIE Batignolles International to extend the Red line to Alcântara. The agreement, signed on 22 December 2023, includes environmental, archaeological and geological‑geotechnical surveys scheduled for July to September. The surveys will map ground conditions, assess excavated soils and identify any archaeological heritage, informing the choice of excavation methods and disposal plans. The extension is part of a broader modernization effort aimed at providing faster, more sustainable public transport for the city of Lisbon.

The project is expected to improve mobility in the capital and is funded as a structural investment in the city's transport network.
