Metro de Lisboa suspended due to 24-hour worker strike
The Metropolitano de Lisboa (ML) suspended all train services and closed its stations on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, due to a 24-hour strike. The industrial action was organized by the Federação dos Sindicatos de Transportes e Comunicações (Fectrans) and specifically targeted management within the Operations Directorate (DOP).
Labor unions cited several grievances, including staffing shortages in the Central Command Post (PCC) and Traction Posts, excessive use of overtime, prolonged shifts, and delays in training inspectors and supervisors. They claimed the strike was necessary due to the administration's failure to implement concrete solutions following a collective agreement signed on April 13, 2026.
The ML board of directors described the strike as “disproportionate” and “unadjusted,” noting that the dispute involves approximately 100 workers out of a total workforce of 1,600. The company stated that the strike disregards recent progress made in collective negotiations. Service was scheduled to resume at 06:30 on Thursday, October 15.
