Lisbon Municipality announces 2027 start for Pope Francis Park
The Lisbon City Council has announced that construction for the green spaces at Parque Papa Francisco, formerly known as Parque Tejo, is scheduled to begin in 2027. The project covers 48 hectares in the Parque das Nações parish, an area that hosted the 2023 World Youth Day.
Councilor Joana Baptista stated that the execution project is nearing completion and the large-scale public works will be implemented in phases. Addressing concerns regarding the site's location on a former landfill, Baptista noted that the landfill has been deactivated for over 30 years and is monitored daily by specialized companies, asserting that it does not pose a constraint to the development of trees, shrubs, and pedestrian paths.
During the announcement, Councilor Carla Madeira described the current state of the area as a “desert” and questioned the status of a stage removed from the site in 2023.
